Case Study: Legislative submissions

A leading global corporation continues to engage FPL Advisory on an annual basis to monitor emerging issues of significance within their sector and to drive a robust government engagement strategy. This approach aims to build rapport and create further opportunities for the client with both state and Federal government to assist in advancing their public policy agenda each year.

Situation

This multinational manufacturing business has been a long-term client for FPL and together we have been able to successfully contribute to major reforms that are in line with their organisational objectives. Recently, our client identified a new specific policy area of focus. They wanted to influence a new area of government and develop strong relationships with new relevant stakeholders.

Action

FPL supported the client to establish these new relationships and also draft complex legislative submissions. FPL provided the research component of the legislative review and identified key dates for submission. Over several weeks of proactive monitoring, we identified major consultation announcements across the states and territories of focus. Having a strong, established relationship with the client, we understood the organisation’s desired goals and outcomes and were able to deliver concise and persuasive submissions, with the aim to achieve reform in key areas. We pulled together balanced, evidence-based submissions through extensive stakeholder engagement, thorough research and effective use of comparative analysis to powerfully illustrate our client’s position. We supported the effectiveness of these submissions through enabling the client to conduct timely engagement with key stakeholders across several key identified Australian states and territories.

Outcome

The submissions contributed to a range of reforms that were beneficial to the client across several different jurisdictions. A strong understanding of the client’s values and history was key to being able to produce submissions that reflected not only the client’s position but ensured it was aligned with their reputation and corporate image/brand. In addition, it allowed for the further development of relationships with key stakeholders and contributed to building the client’s credibility and weight in influencing further areas of legislative reform. The client’s contribution was seen a valuable, accurate and ultimately acknowledged by decision-makers, which importantly led to their influence on desired legislative outcomes.

FPL Advisory supports clients across many industry sectors to resolve risks, create opportunities and support government engagement.
