Case Study: Engaging in government reform

The Australian arm of a global FMCG company engaged FPL Advisory to provide advice on current and emerging regulatory and political issues, to develop policy and briefing material and to support a reset of government engagement activities and relationships.

Situation

A division of the FMCG identified the need for ongoing government relations support as a foundation for greater engagement with relevant policy and regulatory issues that may impact their operations. Following an engagement reset which outlined key issues of focus, FPL identified an emerging policy reform that was central to the FMCG’s corporate values and target market. This reform provided a platform to demonstrate thought leadership with government stakeholders and an opportunity to seize the initiative and ‘have a seat at the table’ with government stakeholders as the reform process matured.

Action

FPL Advisory undertook analysis of the existing legislation and issues paper and provided advice and a strategy for engaging in the reform process. We developed a high-level submission aligned with the company’s position and objectives and built these into the broader government and public engagement plans. We then monitored progress throughout the reform program and identified key opportunities and risks and undertook proactive engagement with government stakeholders to assist build the case for change

Resolution

With this approach and ongoing counsel and advice, the company was able to build deeper relationships with key government stakeholders, stay apprised of changes and be involved in the reform process at appropriate points. The company presented a fact-based argument relevant to the issues outlined through the reform process supporting their position as a thought-leader within the industry and as a partner for government.
